The line between selfishness and
selflessness appears blurred at times. Selfishness
is considered wrong, but why is it wrong to want to succeed and appease one’s
self-interest. Selflessness is connected
to kindness, but can easily be transformed into weakness. There have been stories of selfish greedy
leaders who have lost their souls and friends, stories of people who have been
robbed of their potential greatness. It
is true, your damned if you do, damned if you don’t. The dilemma between selfishness and
selflessness has been present for centuries.
Which is the way to happiness, and which is the moral act.
The act of
being selfish has its perks, but it comes with a price. Desire to be greater is allowed when being
selfish. When that desire is obtained
one can feel self accomplished and on top of the world. The problem is such success can sometimes
only be obtained by being egoistic. Egoism
can isolate people and make them take blinded decisions. The major problem with selfishness is that it
only grows. It grows until the person is
no longer humane. William H. Vanderbilt
once said “The public be damned! I only care about my property.” These words are evidence of how selfishness
can blind and corrupt a person’s soul.
Selflessness is living for others
without self-interest. Living this way
does not bring happiness. Selflessness
causes a loss in potential. With a loss
in potential a person can never reach greatness. It is kind to think of others, but it is also
good to care for oneself. Thich Quang
Duc’s suicide-protest is evidence that although selflessness can make a
difference to others it can harm the selfless person. People must care for themselves because other
people are busy living their own lives.
In
moderation both acts can be accomplished, but the question is where does one
end and the other begin. One must be
selfless because it comes from the heart.
When kindness to others comes from the heart, then it brings happiness
to those receiving it and to those giving it.
Selfishness is a more complex act.
In many occasions trying to do something for oneself affects others
negatively. The problem is it’s impossible
to please everyone. The moderation is
being happy, pleasing oneself by helping others. One must be selfish and selfless depending on
the situation. The selfless should
beware the selfish that take advantage, while the selfish should become more
selfless. Happiness is unreachable if one
is weak or self-centered, there must be a middle ground.

I agree with this post! Selfishness vs. selflessness can be blurred. I like this post because it does draw the line between the two, and it also reminds us as human beings what the both mean. In my opinion, I believe there always has to be a middle ground, just like you stated. However, I could never be too selfish. I always tend to put others before myself, but that is just the type of person I am. It is in my character!

After reading the first sentence, I was instantly intrigued. We often read pieces on either selfishness or selflessness, but hardly ever on both. I thought you did a great job at examining each quality individually and providing pertinent examples. Plus, your conclusion successfully supported your claim and was easy to follow. I would just recommend that you pay closer attention to punctuation in the future. Nice job overall!

I really like this piece because it leaves you to think about yourself. For me, I tend to be more selfless than selfish, but it is true that it can lead to unhappiness at times. You bring out the true potential in others rather than yourself. I believe that there is nothing wrong with being selfish as long as you can control it and know the right reasons for it. There should definitely be a middle ground, but it depends on what type of person you are. Everyone is different, which makes everyone unique. I really liked this piece Sabrina!
I found your piece quite interesting! There does always seem to be a constant battle as you implied (with "versus") between selfishness and selflessness. Which one is right or more appropriate in a certain situation? There usually isn't an easy answer. Your organization works perfectly: a great introduction, the arguments for selfishness and selflessness, and conclusion. I'm glad that you ended on the note of moderation; it really ties in the piece together.
I really liked this post because it shows there really is a difference between the two and many people get them mixed up. I agree that selfishness can corrupt someone if they are not being selfish in a way that betters themselves or brings happiness. You did a great job distinguishing the two.
I also agree with this post because I can be selfish and selfless and its important to keepeven groung

It is interesting how you can take most people and they fit into your descriptions. Good job.

I like this writing because there is not just one description of a person. A lot of people fall into different categories such as selfish and selfless. So overall i liked how it is described throughout and mainly because it makes you think about yourself. Good job
I could not agree more. This was very, very good and the thought put behind it was even better. This was so true about how people are, and even think. Soooooo good. Keep up the good work!
-Alexandra Urena
I especially liked this post because it described the differences between two very important descriptions of people
This topic is great because we all can get selfish at times , so when my mom says I'm being selfish I will go back to this article
I really liked this piece, mainly because I haven't heard anyone talk about the topic before. I like how you displayed the pros and cons of each characteristic and gave quotes that were able to support your claims. Overall, your piece is well thought out and I enjoyed it very much!
I like this piece all around. It teaches us to keep our characters and personalities in check. I also like it because it tells us the true meaning of selfishness and selflessnes, that we should have a little of both, but leaves us thinking about ourselves. Good job.
I love the concept that you were trying to illustrate and I thought you did so very successfully. The battle between both selflessness and selfishness is something that anyone can relate to
This post has brought to my eyes the reality between these two similar words. It is as if it is impossible to live a stable life and stay exactly in the middle of these two adjectives to better yourself as well as society. Amazing point of view on the contradictions.
I enjoyed the you included quotes, which in my opinion makes the story and meaning of it a whole lot greater and more interesting, the was educational and truthful. There is no way to please anyone, but the one person you truly need to please is your mother. Just Kidding it's yourself, great job!
Jose Mancillas
I can understand this pretty well; you presented your point with a straight-forward position and put a complex idea into a simpler way that we can all identify with. I also appreciated the examples to support your position.Thank You
This is really descriptive. I love how you added a quote. This really shows how selfish society can be.
-Quade Ferguson
It's weird to think how the line between the two are blurred. I always try to do the selfless thing, but it comes out almost selfish and you proved it. Nice job!

This piece was very intriguing and was also very thoughtful and made me think for a while as i was reading this piece. I thought about how true and how well thought this was. This piece feels like it came from your soul. good job!!!
This piece made me think so much! I never really thought about both selflessness and selfishness at the same time. Its amazing how you showed that even though both contrast, both are needed in moderation throughout one's life. Your writing technique is very clear, and your concepts and views were easy to grasp as you explained your points well. Great Job! :)
Good job on your post about selfishness and selflessness keep up the good work.
I just learn something new. Its a eye opening to the world. Good job it shows on how humans are its own threats
~Ashleigh Perez
This one caught my eye because it's something I've been pondering lately. In the marching band I'm flute section leader, which would make it my job to help out the people in my section. However, right now we have a big audition coming up. They ask me for help and tips, but should I give it to them? I mean, they are the competition. But they're also my children and its in my nature to help them if I can. Am I being selfish and competitive or selfless and stupid? Either way I enjoyed your blog entry:)

this can help some realize they are selfish and the people they should be . i really liked how you established both behaviors. -abigail rich
Wow, I agree with your argument. We always tend to see selfishness as a negative image, and image of greed and power. But in a way, it is seen as confidence in one self to strive for the best and earn it. But there must be this balance with these two, of selfishness and selflessness. I love how describe their pros and cons. Great Job!
I love this story , it sets out the truth of most people without realizing it. Great Job!
I enjoyed reading your "pondering the abstract" piece because I had never weighed the pros and cons of both selfishness and selflessness until now. You did a great job comparing and contrasting the two characteristics. :)
Wow this is great. It really makes you realize you have to have all things in moderation. We always think of selfishness as something bad and selflessness as something good, but they only are to a certain extent. How you explained both really makes one realise this.
I really like this because it shows how there is a distinct difference between being selfish and selfless. Now people will not get the two mixed up. Great Job.
I liked the way you showed how selfishness, can be different than selflessness.
-Justin H
Your piece very much resonated with me in the sense that I understand what kind of self wreckage can happen when a person never thinks of their own self, their health, their happiness, however, I understand too how a person can become corrupt through their own greed and how they cage themselves behind bars of their own making. I felt that you explained this wonderfully and your examples really added an extra something to the piece. Keep up the great work!
-Rachael Rubalcava
I really enjoyed your piece of writing . As I was reading your piece, I began to question whether I am selfish or selfless. I liked how you drew attention to the differences of the two, and the potential harmful effects of them both. Although most people would associate selflessness with goodness it can also be as dangerous as being selfish. Before reading your piece I wasn't able to recognize that. Thank you for educating me as well as encouraging me to maintain a balance of both.
I liked how you chose to write about this topic and I agree with everything you have said. Often it is difficult to decide whether to be selfish or selfless in a certain situtation. You gave enough information about both selfishness and selflessness but, I think it was your organization of how to display each topic is what made the piece very easy to follow. Great Job !
I really enjoyed this, it really is necessary to recognize that either being too selfish or too selfless is a bad thing, and that both in moderation are really good. I thought it was really incredible how you wrote that selfishness brings harm to your self and that selflessness does the same thing. I'm really glad i read this, it's good to know that being a little selfish isn't a bad thing.
i agre with this and i think many people dont know the difference between thses 2 meanings. i think that selfish to a certian degree can be a good thing butt it is bad. one can not only think about ones self and expect to go anywhere in life with a family and friends and so on. butt selfness is something totally different and takes on a totally different meaning beyond selfishness.
I agree with your topic greatly. Selfishness and selflessness are two important characteristics one should contain, but it is often hard to find the proper balance of both. Like you pointed out, it shouldn't be looked down upon for one to pursue their own self interest but also, one's selflessness may be viewed as a weakness. You did a great job of describing the difference and importance of the two.
-Alexis Santiago
Wow....you seriously had me pulled in. You actually made me see both sides in a much broader sense than before. I agree with everything, especially how it's difficult to please everyone. In a society where we see so little selflessness, we feel the negative effect of a selfish person wether we know it or not. Wether it's a political event, like the recent government shutdown, it affects us one way or another. It's amazing how well thought out this piece is. You really did think about this topic and it's shown flat out. We all have done selfish and selfless acts but it doesn't matter how many times we do one more than another. What does matter is the outcome of your choice and its influence. You've written a piece in which we could all relate and was executed without a hitch. Great job!
This is a really good topic and life lesson. I really enjoyed it because I've never really discussed or read about whether to be selfish or selfless. This can change the way people think about themselves and others, changing the way they are. This topic and resolution can make the world a better place. Thanks for sharing this, good job!
This is a really good post. It makes you think if you are selfish or selfless. Your absolutely right people do need to find a even ground between being selfish and being selfless. Good job =)
wow, great job. This made me think about myself and whether I am selfish or selfless. Now I think I need to search for my "middle ground" like you talked about.
I agree with your views on the two subject, Very thought provoking piece. -Hunter Randle
You made a very valid point. This is an interesting topic that most people would have never given a thought. I think you did an excellent job not only elaborating your point but providing evidence as well. Many people believe selfishness is a negative characteristic but I agree with you that it is necessary to some degree. Good Job on this piece!

I really like how you addressed this argument. You provided solid, concrete evidence for both sides, allowing the reader to also make their own judgment and not just blindly follow the opinions of the author. The fact that you could not choose one over the other show that having both is not a bad thing. Specifically, it's not bad to be selfish. That's really reassuring to me. What a very interesting and well thought-out piece. I very much enjoyed it.
It is kind of disturbing to see oneself reflected in this. the definitions of selfishness and selflessness manifest everyday, in everyone, in some way or another. These are apparent all the time.
Thank you for writing this piece. I absolutely agree with everything that you stated and I enjoyed the conversational, yet informative attitude of the piece.
-Jack McDonald
This was an amazing thought provoking piece. From the moment i opened it i was thinking and agreeing with everything that you said. I most enjoyed your definitions of what is perceived as selflessness and selfishness and how to accomplish both in a perfect way.
- Percy Starks
Wow very interesting topic! I completely agree with you. Unfortunately there are also times when people become appreciated and praised by so many people for their kind actions that it gets to their head and then those great qualities that make them admirable get hidden behind vanity that is influenced by those admirers. I think that finding that "middle ground" is really important for everyone to try to find. Great Job! (:

I always admire when someone can argue both sides of a point and make them equally convincing which you did very well in this post. You started well and ended well and overall I think this is very well organized, thought out, and put together.

I like this. I always think about this topic but then drift off to thinking about something completely random, leaving the topic uncovered. Thank you for taking the time and answering this for me. The way you covered each point of view in a different paragraph allowed me to differentiate between the two and see the positives and negatives of each.
A very thought provoking piece.
I agreed with a lot of this piece that I didn't expect to agree on, especially the part in which both sides of selfishness and selflessness can result with pros and cons.
The statement about how a middle ground must be reached was a very strong observation which is very true.
The examples provided to support your theories were excellent and definitely informed the audience.
Great job!
I loved how you contrasted how it was acceptable to be selfish in order to move up in life in some circumstances. I really enjoyed this essay very much, and your quote really drove home with your topic. Very nicely done!
this story really made me think i really loved it
