“How to make Horchata”-Stephanie R

There are many different types of drinks that exist. I like to consider myself an expert in making Horchata. Horchata is a traditional Mexican drink that is widely popular in Latin America. I learned this drink recipe from my aunt who lives in Mexico. When I would go visit her in Mexico, she always made me this drink since it is my favorite. During my visit about six years ago, she taught me how to make it, since I would always ask her to teach me. I have used this recipe for the past six years and will continue to use it.

The Ingredients Needed:

     1 cup of White Rice

     1 Cinnamon Stick

     Water

     Sugar

     Vanilla Extract

One can of Carnation Evaporated Milk

     One can of Lechera

Tools Needed:

     A Blender

     A Serving Spoon

       A Strainer

     1 gallon Pitcher

     A 16 oz cup

     Measuring Cup

     Can opener

     Measuring Spoon Cups

Warning: Your kitchen might get messy so be prepared to clean it and wash the dishes used!

The steps to making horchata:

1)    The first step is to grab a sixteen oz cup, then use the measuring cup and measure one cup of the white rice. Add the white rice to the cup. Then grab one cinnamon stick and add it to the cup. Then you have to use water and fill up the cup. Lastly, you let the white rice and cinnamon stick soak in water for at least an hour or overnight.

2)    Once the white rice and cinnamon stick have soaked, you will dump the water out that is already in the sixteen oz cup and add new water to the cup until it is full again. You will then grab a blender. Grab the sixteen oz cup and pour it into the blender. Grab the measuring cup again, then add two cups of water. Add the two cups of water to the blender. You will then blend the water, white rice, and cinnamon stick all together for one minute.

3)    You will then grab the one-gallon pitcher, one carnation evaporated milk, and then once can of lechera. With the can opener, you will open the evaporated milk and lechera.

Once they are open you will pour the evaporated milk and lechera into the one-gallon pitcher. After that, you will need a serving spoon to mix both the ingredients together.

4)    After opening and mixing the carnation evaporated milk and lechera into the one- gallon pitcher you will then go back to grab a strainer. Next, you will place the strainer on top of the pitcher or by holding it with your hand above the pitcher. Garb the blender cup and by using the strainer pour the blended white rice and cinnamon stick into the pitcher. Leave the strainer in place because water will need to be added to the pitcher.

5)    You now have to grab the measuring cup and add four cups of water. You will then pour those four cups of water into the strainer so it goes in the pitcher. You will repeat this same step four more times.

6)    After pouring the four cups of water five times. You no longer need the strainer, so anything left behind in it can be thrown away. Now, grab the serving spoon and place it inside the pitcher. Once the serving spoon is inside the pitcher, stir the drink around for one minute.

7)    After stirring the drink, you will now need sugar and the vanilla extract. Grab the measuring spoon cups and use the cup with one teaspoon serving. Open the vanilla extract and add one teaspoon serving to the measuring spoon. You will add one tablespoon of vanilla extract to the pitcher. Once added to the pitcher, grab the serving spoon and mix the drink around for thirty seconds.

8)    Now grab the measuring spoon that is one tablespoon. You will grab your sugar and add three tablespoons of sugar to the pitcher. Then, grab the serving spoon and stir once again for another thirty seconds. It is optional if you want to add more sugar depending on if you like sugary drinks.

9)    Your horchata is now ready to drink and enjoy. It is optional if you want to add ice to the pitcher or your cup. I prefer to add it to my cup rather than the pitcher.

Warning: It is important to refrigerate the horchata thirty minutes after being made because it can go bad after being out for a while.

I hope you enjoy this delicious recipe and share it with others!
